Mobile IPTV in Canada: Install TiviMate on Phone & Tablet the Right Way

Your living-room TV is not the only screen in the house anymore. Between the phone in your pocket, the tablet on the kitchen counter and the iPad the kids borrow for road trips to the cottage, most Canadian households have three or four devices that could be playing live TV. This guide explains how to install TiviMate on a phone and tablet running Android, what to do on an iPhone or iPad where TiviMate does not exist, and how to keep mobile streaming smooth on Wi-Fi and cellular data.

Everything here works with an IPTV North subscription: 25,000+ live channels, 120,000+ movies and series on demand, and 4K/FHD streams. The login you receive by email plugs into every player covered below.

Android or Apple? Start Here

The single biggest question is which operating system your device runs, because it decides which app you will use.

In short: TiviMate is an Android-only app. Apple owners are not left out, they simply use a different player with the same IPTV North credentials.

Before You Install: A Short Checklist

Gather these three things and the whole setup takes minutes:

  • Your login details. After you subscribe or activate the $2.99 24-hour trial, IPTV North emails a server URL, a username and a password. Some players also accept an M3U link, which support can send on request.
  • A compatible device. Any reasonably current Android phone or tablet for TiviMate; any iPhone or iPad that runs current App Store apps for the iOS players.
  • A decent connection. Plan on about 10 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps or more for 4K. Home Wi-Fi from Bell, Rogers, Telus, VidΓ©otron or a regional provider is ideal; LTE and 5G work too, with the data caveats covered later.

Remember that TiviMate is only a player. It has no channels of its own; your subscription supplies the content, and the app simply displays it.

How to Install TiviMate on an Android Phone or Tablet

There are two routes. Try the first one; fall back on the second if the app is not listed for your device.

Route A: Google Play Store

  1. Open Google Play and search for "TiviMate IPTV Player".
  2. Confirm it is the genuine listing (orange-and-white TV icon, lots of reviews) and tap Install.
  3. The download is small and finishes in well under a minute on Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap Open. TiviMate greets you with an empty screen and an invitation to add a playlist.

The Play Store route is the one we recommend: the file is verified, updates arrive automatically and you never have to change any security setting.

Route B: The official APK

Some budget tablets, older phones or regional store settings hide TiviMate because it was built for TV devices. In that case, install the APK from the developer's official site.

  1. Grant permission. Go to Settings β†’ Apps β†’ Special app access β†’ Install unknown apps, select the browser you will use and enable Allow from this source. On older Android versions the switch lives under Settings β†’ Security β†’ Unknown sources.
  2. Download. In that browser, visit the official TiviMate website and tap the APK download. Skip mirror sites, forums and "modded" versions; altered files are a common way malware reaches phones.
  3. Install. Tap the finished download in your notification shade or Files app, review the permissions and press Install.
  4. Clean up. Launch TiviMate, then delete the APK from Downloads and switch the unknown-apps permission off again if you like.

If the browser flags the file, choose Download anyway only when it comes from the official site. When a browser refuses outright, Firefox or Samsung Internet often handle APK downloads differently from Chrome.

Xtream Codes login (best choice)

  1. On the welcome screen, tap Add playlist. Returning users can find it under Settings β†’ Playlists.
  2. Pick Xtream Codes.
  3. Fill in the server URL, username and password exactly as they appear in your email. Paste each field separately so no stray space sneaks in, and double-check upper- and lower-case letters.
  4. Tap Next. TiviMate contacts the server and builds your channel list, categories, TV guide and VOD sections automatically. Leave the app in the foreground for a minute while it works.
  5. Open Live TV and you are watching.

If you prefer an M3U playlist, choose M3U playlist instead and paste the full link. You will then need to add the guide by hand: Settings β†’ EPG β†’ Add EPG source, pasting the XMLTV address support provides. Xtream Codes avoids that extra step, which is why we suggest it first.

The TV Guide on a Small Screen

TiviMate's electronic program guide is its signature feature. On a phone, a few adjustments make it far easier to use:

  • Give it time on first launch. The full multi-day schedule downloads in the background and may take a few minutes to fill every channel. After that it refreshes daily on its own.
  • Force a refresh when rows look empty. Settings β†’ EPG β†’ Update re-downloads the schedule.
  • Fix the clock if shows are an hour off. Canadian viewers span six time zones, and the app does not always read the phone's setting correctly. Adjust Settings β†’ EPG β†’ Time offset until tonight's Oilers or Canadiens game lines up with the real puck drop. Newfoundland viewers will need the half-hour offset.
  • Use the list layout on phones. The full grid shines on a tablet, but on a 6-inch screen a single-channel list view is easier to scroll with a thumb.

Free or Premium TiviMate on Mobile?

The free app is enough to watch live channels and browse VOD from your IPTV North account. Premium is a separate, paid TiviMate licence (not part of your IPTV plan) that unlocks the extras.

Most people who only watch on a phone are happy with the free version. If you want an alert five minutes before a Blue Jays first pitch or like to replay a game you missed, Premium is worth it. Activation is done through the TiviMate Companion app: create an account there, buy Premium, then sign in to TiviMate on the phone with the same email. Our Android TV TiviMate guide covers the activation screens in detail.

iPhone and iPad: What to Use Instead of TiviMate

TiviMate is not in the App Store, and there is no legitimate way to sideload it onto iOS. The good news: your IPTV North account is not tied to any one app. The same credentials work in several well-regarded iOS players.

IPTV Smarters Pro

A straightforward pick for iPhone. Choose the Xtream Codes login, enter your server URL, username and password, and live TV, series and movies appear in separate sections. The layout is simple enough for anyone in the family.

GSE Smart IPTV

Great on an iPad thanks to its roomy guide grid. It accepts both Xtream Codes and M3U, manages several playlists and handles the program guide well. Power users like its customization options.

Other options

Players such as Flex IPTV and iPlayTV also accept Xtream Codes or M3U logins and feel at home on Apple hardware. Try the free tier of one or two and keep the interface you prefer; switching costs nothing because your subscription stays the same.

Setting up any iOS player

  1. Install the app from the App Store.
  2. Choose Add user, Add playlist or Login with Xtream Codes (wording varies).
  3. Enter the server URL, username and password from your IPTV North email.
  4. Wait for channels and the guide to load, then pin your favourites.

Apple TV owners can use the same players on the big screen; the best IPTV apps for smart TVs article compares them.

Streaming on Mobile Data Without Surprises

Cellular streaming is where mobile viewers get caught off guard. Canadian data plans are not cheap, and live video is hungry.

How much data does live TV use?

These are rough, typical figures; actual usage depends on the channel and the player.

QualityApproximate data per hourExample: a 3-hour NHL game
SD1-2 GB3-6 GB
HD (1080p)3-5 GB9-15 GB
4K7-10 GB21-30 GB

Practical ways to save data

  • Watch the big games on Wi-Fi. Save cellular data for highlights on the bus rather than full playoff games.
  • Choose SD versions of channels on the go. Many channels offer several quality levels; on a phone screen, SD looks surprisingly decent.
  • Download nothing you don't need. Auto-play trailers and background VOD previews add up; turn them off in the player settings.
  • Check your carrier's video policy. Some mobile plans limit video resolution or speed. If streams look soft only on cellular, that may be the reason.
  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi at home. In a busy condo tower the 2.4 GHz band is crowded; 5 GHz is usually steadier for live sports.

Throttling and VPNs

If streams run fine on Wi-Fi at noon but stall every evening, your provider may be slowing video traffic at peak hours. A VPN connected to a Canadian server can help by hiding the type of traffic you send. Test it during an ordinary game before relying on it for a playoff night, and read our guide on whether you need a VPN for IPTV.

Battery, Heat and Player Settings

Decoding live HD video for three hours is hard work for a phone.

  • Plug in for long sessions. Battery-saver modes throttle the processor, which can cause stutters that look like network buffering.
  • Try another decoder. In TiviMate, Settings β†’ Player lets you switch video players. ExoPlayer tends to handle variable-bitrate sports streams efficiently on phones; if audio goes missing, flipping to another decoder usually brings it back.
  • Keep the phone cool. A phone lying on a duvet or sitting in direct sun will slow itself down to protect the battery.

Send Your Phone to the Big Screen

At home, you do not have to squint. Most Android phones can cast or mirror to a Chromecast, Google TV or compatible smart TV from the quick-settings panel (look for Cast, Screen cast or Smart View). iPhone and iPad users can use AirPlay with an Apple TV. For a permanent living-room setup, installing a player directly on the TV or a Fire TV Stick gives better quality than mirroring.

Three Real-World Mobile Scenarios

Seeing how other viewers use their devices makes it easier to plan your own setup.

The commuter in Toronto

Maria rides the subway and the GO Train every weekday. She installed TiviMate on her Android phone, built a favourites list with CP24, CBC News and Sportsnet, and switched those channels to SD. Her morning news fix uses a fraction of her monthly data, and when she gets home she casts the evening game to her Chromecast instead of watching on the small screen.

The hockey family in Saskatoon

The Nguyens share one account between a Galaxy Tab in the kitchen and a Fire TV Stick in the basement. Because a standard plan streams on one device at a time, they agreed on a simple rule: the basement TV has priority on game nights, and the tablet is for weekend cartoons and cooking shows from the VOD library. When they wanted both screens running at once, they asked support about adding a connection.

The retiree with an iPad in QuΓ©bec City

Jean-Pierre never owned an Android device. He installed GSE Smart IPTV on his iPad, entered the same login he uses on his smart TV and now watches TVA and RDS from the sunroom. The large guide grid on the tablet is easier on his eyes than the TV remote, and he uses AirPlay when his grandchildren visit.

These setups have one thing in common: the subscription stays the same while the app changes to suit the device. That flexibility is the main reason to set up mobile viewing before you need it, rather than scrambling five minutes before puck drop.

Organizing Thousands of Channels on a Phone

Scrolling through 25,000+ channels with a thumb is nobody's idea of fun. Build a short list once and save yourself the trouble:

  1. Long-press a channel you watch often, such as TSN, Sportsnet, RDS or CBC.
  2. Choose Add to favourites.
  3. Repeat for your local news station and the channels your family actually uses.
  4. Open the Favourites group from the home screen for one-tap access.

Hiding whole categories you never watch (for example, languages you don't speak) also speeds up the guide on older phones.

Troubleshooting Mobile Playback

"Invalid login" or authentication failure. Almost always a typo. Re-enter the server URL (including the port), username and password from your email, watching for extra spaces and capital letters. Also confirm your plan or trial is still active.

Buffering only on cellular. Lower the stream quality, run a speed test at speedtest.net, and move to Wi-Fi when possible. Consistent stalls at the same time each night point to congestion or throttling. Our buffering fix guide has more steps.

Guide shows "No information". Update the EPG manually. If that fails, clear the app's cache in the phone's Settings β†’ Apps β†’ TiviMate β†’ Storage, reopen it and log in again so the guide address is fetched fresh.

Picture but no sound. Switch the video player in the app's settings. If a single channel is affected, try its alternate quality version.

APK download blocked. Allow the download only from the official site, or use another browser. If the Play Store lists TiviMate on your device, use it instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install TiviMate on an iPhone if I really want it?

No. TiviMate is built only for Android and has no App Store version. On iPhone and iPad, use IPTV Smarters Pro, GSE Smart IPTV or a similar player with your IPTV North credentials; you get the same channels and VOD.

Which is better on a tablet: the grid guide or the list view?

On tablets of 10 inches or more, the grid is comfortable and shows several hours at a glance. On phones, the list view is usually easier to read and scroll. Try both; the setting can be changed at any time.

Will my IPTV North plan work on my phone and my TV?

Yes, the same credentials work on every supported device. Standard plans allow one device to stream at a time, so starting a stream on the phone may stop the one on the TV. Ask support about extra connections if several people watch at once.

Is watching on cellular data a good idea?

For short sessions, yes. For full games or movies, Wi-Fi is the smarter choice because HD streaming can use several gigabytes per hour. Switching to SD channels helps if you must use data.

Does the APK version of TiviMate update itself?

The Play Store version updates automatically. If you installed the APK, download the newer file from the official site when an update is released; it installs over the old one and keeps your playlist.

Can I test all of this before paying?

Yes. IPTV North offers a 24-hour trial for $2.99, paid by Interac e-Transfer, so you can install TiviMate or an iOS player, log in and check quality on your own phone and network first.

Your Channels, Every Screen

Whether you install TiviMate on a phone and tablet running Android or choose an App Store player for your iPhone and iPad, one IPTV North account covers it all: live NHL, CFL and NFL, Canadian news, and a huge on-demand library, at home or on the road. Plans start at $19 for a month, with 3, 6 and 12-month options at $29, $49 and $79, all without a contract and payable by Interac e-Transfer.
